Cabbie Killed In Lower Manhattan Crash, Police Say

Lena Pitu, a Queens resident, died after her cab crashed into a metal barrier on the sidewalk, authorities said.

LOWER MANHATTAN, NY — A taxi driver was killed in an early morning crash near the World Trade Center, police said.

Officers found Lena Pitu inside a yellow cab about 1:20 a.m. on Thursday morning, authorities said. The 76-year-old woman was rushed to Bellevue Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Pitu was driving north down South End Avenue when she struck a metal barrier on the sidewalk near Liberty Street, according to a statement from police. Authorities believe that no other people or cars were involved in the accident.
