Police Rescue Injured Hawk In Financial District

Animal Care and Control examined the bird who was spotted "laying in the street," police said.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT, NY — Police came to the aid of an injured hawk in the Financial District Wednesday morning who was spotting "laying in the street," according to police.

Police responded to a call of a possibly injured hawk at Wall Street between Water and Front streets at 7:50 a.m. Animal Care and Control was called to the the scene to examine the bird for injuries, police said.

Lower Manhattan has a thriving hawk scene that animal rescue officials and advocates monitor closely. In April, an injured red tailed hawk named Dora, who has ruled the roost at Tompkins Square Park in the East Village with her beau Christo since 2013, received treatment for a damaged wing at the hands of the Long Island nonprofit Wildlife in Need of Rescue and Rehabilitation.

Citywide there are at least 20 nesting hawk couples, according to parks department officials. The city does not track the hatchlings of nesting hawks, but experts believe the hawks either remain in the five boroughs or travel to other parts of New York or New Jersey once they leave their nests.

For years a red-tailed hawk couple has nested outside a window on the 12th floor of New York University's Bobst Library in the West Village. The pair laid their first eggs of the year in April.
