WATCH: Mark the Dog Guy Is the Hero New York Animal Shelters Needed

Mark chokes up thinking about how he can give orphaned dogs a chance to be themselves again just by giving them a good fur-cut.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT, NY — "Mark the Dog Guy" is the latest local Facebook star. Mark comes to the Animal Care Centers of New York headquarters of New York City, takes dogs that have been taken off the streets, and gives them a much needed groom. He often will stop what he's doing and come right away if the dog is really in need.

Usually that means shaving the dogs' thick layers of mats off from years of neglect and giving them the freedom to move, which many of them haven't had in years.

Mark does this all for free, on a volunteer basis. He documents his grooming process on his Instagram, where viewers can see the incredible transformations of the dogs, and the expressions on the dogs' faces when they realize they've lost several pounds of sticky, dusty fur.

"I said wouldn't it be great if somebody went to the shelter and cleaned up the shelter dogs so that they looked amazing?" Mark says in a video interview with him by HoopLaHa Facebook news company. "That would help their attitude and hopefully help them get adopted. My fiance looked at me, she's like, 'Hey, Mark, why don't you go to grooming school and do what you said before?'"

Mark explains in the video that the first dog he ever groomed was considered unadoptable because he was violent when people tried to touch him. Once he got the razor underneath the matted fur, he totally calmed down and relaxed. He got adopted almost right after.

"Many people think that grooming is just for aesthetics," Summer Dolder, manager at Animal Care Centers of New York, says. "It's actually a medical necessity for many of our animals."

Mark clearly really cares about these dogs. He chokes up crying about their poor conditions when they enter the shelter. You can see the dogs up for adoption at the NYCACC locations here.
