$9.75 Million Sag Harbor House Sale Breaks Record

For years, the little whaling village of Sag Harbor was known as the "Un-Hamptons," with quaint 19th-Century houses, set cheek-by-jowl with their neighbors, available for a song. Those days are over.

A historic Sag Harbor Captain’s home at 238 Main Street In Sag Harbor sold last month for a record-breaking $9.75 million. Gary DePersia, of Corcoran Realty, who co-listed the property, called it a “benchmark.”

“It’s a record breaking sale for so many reasons,” DePersia told Patch. “It’s a historic house, though non-waterfront property on 1 acre north of Montauk Highway. It’s a sale that compares favorably to houses for sale on First Neck Road in Southampton or Lee Avenue in East Hampton.”

According toDePersia, the 8,000-square-foot Greek Revival-style house was built in 1833 by Nathan P. Howell, the scion of a wealthy whaling clan, and it remained in the family into the 1970s. The property was bought in 1997 by Nancy Richardson, who both restored and modernized the six-bedroom, four-story house—which features wood-beamed ceilings and multiple fireplaces—and the acre of lawn, gardens, and specimen tress on which it sits.
