Former Sag Harbor United Methodist Church Building Put on the Market For $23.5 Million
The church shut down in 2008.

The former Sag Harbor United Methodist Church building, which closed down in 2008 after it was purchased by art collector and gallery owner Sloan Schaffer, was recently put on the market for $23.5 million.
The home, located on 48 Madison Street in downtown Sag Harbor, has been listed by broker Gary DePersia of The Corcoran Group.
After the church closed, Bates Masi + Architects, Lettieri Construction and Gregg Bleam Landscape Architect collaborated to turn the 19th century Methodist Church into a modern home, which is set to be completed next year.

The 6-bedroom, 9.5-bathroom house provides ”dramatic common rooms, wonderfully spaced bedrooms, uncompromising quality and superb amenities rising to over 50 feet, finishing yet higher at its unique fourth story bell tower with views over the Harbor to the North Fork and beyond,” according to the listing written by DePersia.
The home contains a recreation room, a fully outfitted indoor spa with oversized private steam, sauna and grotto hot tub augmented with an additional steam shower and full spa bath.

In addition, the half-acre property contains an infinity edge heated Gunite pool with submerged floating spa serviced by pool bath.
“Paying homage to the 1835 origins of the church while offering elements of design and construction that could never be duplicated again, 48 Madison will forever change your perception of Sag Harbor,” the listing reads.
After the church shut down, Southampton Town owned the property until they sold it to designer Elizabeth Dow in 2012, who planned to convert the building into a business for textile, mixed-media and wallcovering, according to Newsday.
She then sold it to gallery owner and art collector Sloan Schaffer in 2013, when she began to convert it into a home by getting the proper permits, Newsday reports.
