EMFD Assists with Jennings Creek Wildfire Emergency in Orange County

Volunteers pushed back a fire that came within twenty feet of a home.

Volunteers from the East Meadow Fire Department joined with fire departments on Long Island and across the state to help contain the wildfire at Jennings Creek in Orange County. The fire has burned over 5,300 acres, primarily in Sterling Forest State Park near the New Jersey border. It is part of several active wildfires burning throughout the northeast, including NYC and Long Island.

According to Nassau County Fire Marshall Mike Uttaro, firefighters experienced hilly terrain while working to contain the fire and in one instance the East Meadow Fire Department pushed back a fire that came within twenty feet of a home.

In addition to the volunteers, the EMFD has provided two pumpers to assist New York State Forest Rangers, leading the effort with firefighters from New York and New Jersey and a wildfire firefighting team from Montana. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
