Gonsalves' Office: It's Too Early For Maragos to Answer For Sandy Payments

Democratic Caucus says Legislative Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves refused to allow Comptroller George Maragos to appear before legislature to discuss millions of dollars spent.

Officials from Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves', office said that it is too soon for Comptroller George Maragos to speak before the Legislature to discuss the millions spent after Hurricane Sandy.

On Monday, the Nassau County Legislature's Democratic Caucus put out a press release speaking out against Gonsalves' refusal to allow Maragos to appear at Monday's legislature session to discuss the funds spent following the natural disaster.

Frank Moroney, spokesperson for Norma Gonsalves, said that it is too early for Maragos to speak on the matter.

"The comptroller said that he would seek records of contractors last week and that information has not been compiled yet," Moroney said.

Maragos has asked the 12 largest Hurricane Sandy contractors for their payroll and expense records, including Huntington's Looks Great Services Inc., which is due nearly $70 million for debris removal, Newsday reported. The request for the records is part of a routine audit that is taking place now that the hurricane has past.

Moroney said that Maragos has invited anyone who wants to look at the claims to do so, but the review process is still in its early stages.

"Since all of the material has not been turned over there can't be any analysis," he said. "It's simply too premature."
