Hands-on Geometry Lessons at California Avenue Elementary School
Hands-on Mathematical Lessons for Elementary Scholars
UNIONDALE, NEW YORK (MAY 2023)—Uniondale Union Free School District’s California Avenue Elementary School classes recently conducted a series of hands-on learning activities to creatively teach scholars about geometry. Classes took part in a geometry scavenger hunt and built 3-D models.
“When scholars have the opportunity to employ the lessons they have learned through hands-on activities, they reinforce the skills they have acquired,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil. “We take every opportunity to allow our scholars to learn by doing. By using hands-on math, scholars have the opportunity to better conceptualize concepts that could be otherwise challenging to visualize.”
On a beautiful sunny day, scholars headed outdoors for the geometry scavenger hunt, where they searched the playground with their iPads looking for different angles. Scholars hunted for right, acute and obtuse angles and, once found, took photos of the angles and logged them in their keynote journal.

In another fun, hands-on learning exercise, California Avenue scholars built 3-D models. Using toothpicks and miniature marshmallows, scholars assembled shapes and tracked the number of edges, vertices and shapes of their faces on a graphic organizer.
