Letter to the Editor: Concern Regarding State of East Meadow

One resident talks about tales of thievery in her area.

Dear Editor,

I have been a resident in East Meadow for almost 10 years.

My concern as well as I am sure you have heard is the problem that we, as a community, are experiencing.

We have noticed a lot of cases where people are walking around at night, checking for cars unlocked and opening cars and checking for change, goods, etc.

A few neighbors had this happening to them a few times. Yes, nobody should leave their car doors opened, however I am an early riser and always notice and watch people walking around aimlessly. The other night I had a man sitting in front of my house for hours with to large sticks, later to find out he was in my neighbor's yard chanting. Of course police were called.

A neighbor few doors down had someone open his car and took things four times already. I also notice a lot of homeless living and sleeping in ...literally camping out. This does not make me feel safe.

With the taxes I pay, there is no reason why I fear to go to the park for my morning walk. Because of this, I don't. I have written to the TOH, no response. I understand the people are homeless, however there is more and more in the park using the bathrooms and sleeping.

Our children going to the park, using the facilities and my concern that I will not let them use the bathrooms due to this. The other night, someone saw a young man trying to open a car door. Startled by her yells, he ran through her back yard and police were called.

He was homeless, on drugs and trying to steal in unlocked cars. Now this incident happened the same night two hours apart from the crazy man sitting in front of my house with the sticks on the same block.
