LIRR Train Derails After Hitting Truck on Tracks; 3 Dead

WESTBURY, NY – Authorities have now confirmed that three people are dead after a Long Island Rail Road train struck a truck on the tracks and then slammed into a platform at the Westbury station Tuesday night.

The crash occurred near the School Street crossing and involved the 6:36 p.m. train from Ronkonkoma that was due at Penn Station at 7:56 p.m.

One person who was pronounced dead at the scene was found in the truck and another was found under the train, 1010 Wins reported. An unknown number of passengers on the train suffered minor injuries.

The crossing gates were down at the time of the crash and Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder told News 12 that the truck was likely trying to beat the train.

"My heart goes out to the victims and their loved ones," Gov. Andrew Cuomo wrote on Twitter Tuesday night. "In the wake of this tragedy, I am calling for a full investigation into the collision including with the complete cooperation of the MTA, State Police, local law enforcement and the NTSB."
