LONG ISLAND, NY — Mother Nature is set to send a post-holiday wintry blast across Long Island, with heavy snow expected Friday night into Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

A winter storm warning is in effect from 7 p.m. Friday until 1 p.m. Saturday, with heavy snow expected and accumulation between 4 and 8 inches, the NWS said.

The highest amounts are expected from near Riverhead on westward, the NWS said. The North and South Forks will likely see a sharper gradient with amounts 2 to 5 inches, the NWS said.

Travel could be very difficult; te hazardous conditions could impact the Friday evening commute, the NWS said.

"If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Check local Department of Transportation information services for the latest road conditions," the NWS said.
