Nassau Officers Recover Loaded Gun During Traffic Stop: Police

Police say they found the gun when pulling over a car that was driving at night without headlights.

UNIONDALE, NY — A Nassau County man was arrested Friday night after police say officers found a loaded handgun in his car during a traffic stop.

According to police, officers on patrol at 11:30 p.m. on July 22 saw a 2006 grey Honda Odyssey driving near the intersection of Nassau Road and Avenue B in Uniondale with no front head lights. The officers pulled the car over, police said.

During the traffic stop, police say the officers found a loaded handgun inside the car. The driver — Henry Canales, 22, of Hempstead — was arrested without incident.

Canales is charged with second- and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm and vehicle and traffic law violations. He was arraigned on July 23 in First District Court in Hempstead. He was ordered held on bail of $100,000 cash or $200,000 bond, which was not posted.
