Adelphi Students to Intern at Community Chest

Community Fellows Program has students working at non-profit organizations.

will get some extra help this summer from Adelphi students as part of the school’s efforts to give students experience at non-profit organizations.

“Adelphi’s Community Fellows Program is a brilliant concept created by a forward thinking university president,” said Bob Block, the Chest’s executive director. “Community Chest is proud to have been selected as a partner in this worthwhile program.”

Qualifying students, who can be studying any major at Adelphi, spend 9 to 10 weeks at a non-profit organization for a stipend. Five Towns Community Chest will have three interns this summer, including one who will be doing marketing and web development.

“The program offers field experience to upperclassmen, with an opportunity to develop their skills by assisting accredited not-for-profit organizations on Long Island,” Block said. “What can be better than a mutually beneficial program designed to encourage students the value of community service?”

Jonathan Ivanoff, associate director of internships at Adelphi, said that the program now boasts of 63 students working in 36 nonprofit organizations across the New-Long Island area.

“Meeting Bob Block was … the important link that brought [the Chest] together with Adelphi University,” he said. “Bob's visit to the campus this past year to inquire about internships began a close collaboration between Bob and I on developing experiential learning opportunities through [the Chest].”

One of the Chest’s interns, Adrish Tewarie, has already started, and will be doing PR for the organization.

“I hope to gain knowledge throughout the whole process,” he said, “but I also hope to share my vision with the organization.”
