Attempted Elder Scam Started In New Mexico, Ended In Nassau

Police say a savvy senior knew she was being scammed. Police arrested a person when they tried to pick up the money.

VALLEY STREAM, NY — A Queens woman was arrested in Valley Stream for an attempted elder scam that started in New Mexico, Nassau County police said.

According to police, an 84-year-old woman in New Mexico was called by a man who said he worked for Best Buy's Geek Squad. The man said she was given too much money in a refund and need to return some. She was told to send $14,900 to an address on Mulberry Place in Valley Stream.

The woman knew it was a scam and called her local police department, which contacted Nassau County police.

Police say Monira Chowdhurry, 50, of Queens, was arrested in front of the Mulberry Place home.

She was arrested with third-degree grand larceny. She was issued an appearance ticket and is due back in court on March 30.
