Drunken Driver Crashed SUV With 2 Kids Inside: Police

The crash occurred early Monday, police say.

HEWLETT, NY – A 36-year-old man was arrested on felony DWI charges after he crashed his SUV into a telephone pole early Monday in Hewlett, Nassau Police said.

Luis Hernandez, of Roosevelt, crashed a 2002 Toyota RAV4 into a telephone pole at Broadway and Rockaway Avenue around 1:20 a.m., police said. There were four passengers in the SUV – a 26-year-old man, a 27-year-old woman and two children, ages 1 and 3

All five people in the SUV were transported to a local area hospital for precautionary evaluations and the children were released into the custody of their mother.

Hernandez was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated DWI, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, DWI and unlicensed operator.
