Man Injures State Trooper While Resisting Arrest After Nassau Crash: Police

A man found to be under the influence resisted arrest and injured an officer after being accused of causing a collision, police say.

VALLEY STREAM, NY — A New York State Police trooper was injured while attempting to arrest a driver in connection with a driving while ability impaired incident on Monday morning in Valley Stream, the department stated.

A trooper responded to a two-car property damage collision on the westbound Southern State Parkway near Exit 13 (Central Avenue) around 9 a.m., police said.

The crash was caused by a green Honda Odyssey, which was stopped in the middle lane, police said. The Honda was not directly involved in the collision, but it caused other vehicles to change lanes and collide, police said. The two-car collision was cleared, and the Honda was moved to the shoulder of the parkway, police said.

The trooper approached the driver of the Honda, Kelvin Almonte, 35, of Brooklyn, and interviewed him, police said. The trooper conducted a DWI investigation and concluded that Almonte was under the influence, police said. During the arrest, Almonte became non-compliant, police said, and a struggle ensued. The trooper was able to subdue Almonte with the help of an off-duty Nassau County Police Department sergeant, police said.

Almonte was taken into custody without further incident, and he was transported to the East Meadow barracks for processing, police said. The trooper suffered injuries that are not life-threatening during the struggle, police said.
