Ackerman Endorses Meng For Congress

Retiring Rep. throws weight behind Flushing Assembly member.

Congressman Gary Ackerman, D-Bayside, who that he would not seek re-election, endorsed Assemblywoman , D-Flushing, on Tuesday.

Meng is the official nominee of the Queens Democratic party. Ackerman's current district, which is being carved up after the 2010 census results reduced New York's Congressional delegation, currently represents about one third of the new Sixth.

Ackerman characterized Meng as a “quiet champion of the multitudes of people who need a little help.”

Meng, like Ackerman, came from an immigrant family. She was born in Corona, and raised in Bayside before her family relocated to Flushing.

Her career in public service, she said, has been about being a “voice for the voiceless — which has become the middle class.”

Meng is currently among the front-runners in a hotly-contested primary. Her Democratic opponents are Dr. , Councilwoman and Assemblyman . Awaiting the Democratic victor in the general election will be Republican and Green Party candidate .
