Crime at a Glance: Auto Theft Issues

Latest numbers show increase in grand larceny auto incidents in Rego Park, Forest Hills.

Crime took a bit of a dip in Forest Hills in the most recent week — compared to last year, anyway.

Let's dig into the numbers:

  • The 112 Precinct has continued its year-plus long streak without any reported homicides in the area,
  • Burglaries and grand larceny auto are the major crimes that have seen an increase over the first two-and-a-half months of the year, compared to 2012.
  • There have been 30 burglaries in the 112 Precinct so far this year, compared to 22 during the same amount of time in 2012.
  • Grand Larceny Auto — any major car-related theft, including tires and rims — have climbed significantly over the first part of the year. So far there have been 20 this year, compared to just nine during the same period in 2012.
  • All other major crimes have seen large decreases, including robbery, felony assault and grand robbery. So far the number of robberies have been more than cut in half compared to 2012.
  • In total, there were only eight major crimes recorded between March 4 and March 10. Five of those were grand larceny incidents — still a decrease compared to 14 during the same period last year.
