Get Fresh Fruits And Veggies Weekly In This Forest Hills Group

Join the local Community Supported Agriculture group by May to get weekly organic produce shipments from a Long Island farm all summer long.

FOREST HILLS, QUEENS -- Farms in New York City may be few and far between, but that won't keep one Queens group from their weekly doses of organic fruits and veggies straight from the fields this summer.

At the beginning of each harvest, members of Forest Hills Community Supported Agriculture buy into a subscription of fresh produce delivered weekly from Long Island farms throughout the season, and there's still time to get in on this year's haul.

The Forest Hills CSA announced its2018 membership contract on Monday, and locals have until May 29 to sign up. For an income-based seasonal fee, your weekly box of fruits and vegetables gets delivered to The Church In The Gardens every Tuesday through Nov. 13, and you'll have from 4 to 8 p.m. to pick it up, according to the contract.

This year's CSA vegetable shares from Golden Earthworm Organic Farm range from $269 to $538 and typically feed a family of three or four, according to the contract.

Members can expect anywhere from 6-10 veggies per week from more than 100 varieties grown at Golden Earthworm. The family-owned farm in Jamesport, Long Island, also grows watermelon and strawberries, so don't be surprised if the sweet treats make their way into a few of your boxes.

Forest Hills CSA members can buy a 14-week fruit share for $92 from Briermere Farms in Riverhead, Long Island.

The farm distributes peaches, apples and pears on a "Spend-Down Method," meaning you'll pay at the beginning of harvest, but you won't start receiving the fruit until it comes into season around early July. From there, you get around 3-4 pounds of fruit per week until your payment is spent, the contract states.

Members can also opt to add extras to their boxes twice a month from the Lewis Waite Farm upstate. The Greenwich farm offers products like bread, dairy, eggs, meats, fish, meats, coffees, teas and more, which you can pay for individually.

In addition to the upfront cost for fruits and veggies, members of Forest Hills CSA must pay a seasonal $15 administrative fee and do at least six hours of volunteer work for the group each season. Duties include truck unloading, distribution and surplus delivery.
