Locals Raise $1,500 For Burglarized Rego Park Knishery

Someone broke Knish Nosh's door and fled with a cash-filled register, NYPD said, prompting locals to raise funds for the longtime knishery.

REGO PARK, QUEENS — Neighbors sprung into action this week to support a longtime knishery that was burglarized in the middle of the night.

Someone broke the front glass door at Knish Nosh, a kosher restaurant on Queens Boulevard between 66th and 67th avenues, and ran off with a cash-filled register Tuesday, according to the NYPD.

Community members immediately rallied around the eatery, starting a fundraiser on behalf of the eatery that's raised over $1,500 in three days — just several hundred dollars short of its $2,000 goal, which will help cover repairs, a register replacement, and the stolen $100.

"Please be a part of donating at least $2,000 towards Knish Nosh's recovery, and support a small business that has been part of our community for generations," wrote Michael Perlman on the fundraiser page.

Haig Schneiderman, the owner of Knish Nosh, told QNS that he's grateful for the outpouring of support on behalf of his business, which has been operating in Rego Park since 1952.

"Our customers are regulars that have come in over the years. It goes back to generations and now we have the kids coming in," Schneiderman told the outlet. "We’re alive, well and focused."

This isn't the first time that someone's broken into the shop, though.

Knish Nosh was burglarized in 2015 amid a string of local robberies, and someone already triped to break into the shop earlier this year, according to Schneiderman.

The business owner isn't deterred by these incidents, instead focusing his energy on a future national expansion.

"There’s a big demand for our product, and there’s not too many of us that make this type of thing," he told QNS of his shop, which is known for its knishes but makes an array of sandwiches, soups, and pre-made dishes, like stuffed cabbage and corned beef, too.

"We’ve been very successful, and we love to make people very happy," he told the outlet.

Reached for comment, an employee at Knish Nosh wouldn't tell Patch more about the robbery, but said that the knishery is open for business, despite being listed as "temporarily closed" on Google.
