FOREST HILLS, QUEENS — A new martial arts academy opened its doors on Wednesday on Austin Street, marking its fifth location citywide.

Kings Combat, located at 72-08 Austin Street, offers Jiu-Jitsu, Kickboxing, and self-defense classes to adults and children on the second floor of the building.

Co-owner Kit Yeung told Patch it’s imperative to offer self-defense classes, especially to the Asian community which has been targeted with hostility after the pandemic outbreak.

“Even as a trained martial artist with over 15 years of experience, I still felt really nervous riding the subway or walking the street,” said Yeung. “It’s valuable to be able to go to your local martial arts academy and learn about what you’re body can do.”

New Yorkers can book a free trial class on the academy’s website. The facility is open Monday to Thursday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday from 4: 30 p.m. to 9 p.m.; and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
