Arrest Made In Connection To Deadly LI Crash Last Month: Police

UNIONDALE, NY — A 33-year-old man from Hempstead has been charged in connection to a fatal crash last month in Uniondale.

Elvin Maradiaga is charged with second-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault, vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of an incident, second-degree vehicular assault and DWI, police said.

A 35-year-old passenger, Alex Jose Banegas, 35, of Plainview, died from injuries sustained on March 1, police said.

On the morning of Feb. 24, the collision took place on Jerusalem Avenue near Liberty Street. An overturned 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee struck a pole, police said.
