Beeping Garbage Bag Causes Scare In Garden City: Police

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Dec. 6.

Nov. 30

  • Officers responded to the Nassau Boulevard Railroad Crossing where a vehicle struck and damaged the railroad gates.
  • Officers responded to Nassau Boulevard for a suspicious garbage bag with a beeping sound emanating from it. Upon investigating, it was determined a resident discarded a fire alarm.
  • A driver on Clinton Road was charged with driving with a suspended registration and excessive speed.

  • An employee at the Mobil Station on Franklin Avenue said a woman entered the store and stole cigarettes.
  • A driver on Kingsbury Road was charged with unlicensed operation and passing a stop sign.
  • A driver on Clinton Road was charged with suspended license operation, suspended registration, and defective brake lights.
  • A driver on Clinton Road was charged with suspended license operation, suspended registration, and illegal exhaust system.

Dec. 2

  • A 48-year-old driver was charged with leaving the scene of an accident after striking a police vehicle assigned to traffic duties on Cherry Valley Avenue.
  • A white sedan reportedly left the scene after colliding with another vehicle on Washington Avenue.
  • A victim called a phone number displayed on her computer screen after her computer froze and provided personal information to fix the issue. It was later determined to be a scam when the information provided was used to make unauthorized charges.
  • Officers investigated a road rage incident which reportedly began on the Southern State Parkway and ended in Garden City.
  • A victim reported she met a man on Franklin Avenue and sold him a pocketbook. She later determined the subject never transferred the money to her account to complete the transaction.
  • A 23-year-old man was charged with leaving the scene of an accident that occurred on Hilton Avenue on Nov. 22.

  • Upon investigation of a two-vehicle accident on Old Country Road, officers arrested one of the drivers, a 30-year-old male, for Aggravated DWI (more than .18 percent blood alcohol level).
  • Officers responded to Walgreens to investigate a report of three people fleeing the scene after attempting to make a purchase using counterfeit money.
  • A driver on Franklin Avenue was charged with unlicensed operation and excessive speed.

Dec. 4

  • Items were reported stolen from a vehicle parked on Huntington Road.
  • Officers responded to Franklin Court for a water line break.
  • Firefighters and police responded to a residence for a fire alarm and determined the cause to be an oven issue.
  • Officers were assigned to traffic and safety details for the annual tree lighting ceremony on Stewart Avenue.
  • A driver on Cherry Valley Avenue was charged with driving with a suspended license and improper turn.

Dec. 5

  • Upon investigation of a stolen vehicle, surveillance cameras showed a man walking up a Brixton Road driveway, entering a vehicle, and then fleeing the scene in the vehicle. The vehicle was later located in Delaware. The investigation is ongoing.
  • A Garden City Plaza business reported that there was an unauthorized charge against the company’s bank account.
  • A vehicle fled the scene after colliding into another vehicle on Stewart Avenue at Cherry Valley Avenue.
  • Firefighters and police responded to a residence for a fire alarm and determined the cause to be an accidental trip.
  • Officers investigated a report of a man threatening to harm a Mobil Station employee after his charge app was rejected.

Dec. 6

  • A business reported a fraudulent charge of $9,300 was made against the company’s credit card account.
  • A victim’s identity was stolen and used to make an out of state purchase totaling $600.
  • A victim’s identity was stolen and used to open multiple unauthorized bank accounts.
  • Firefighters and police responded to two fire alarm calls; in both incidents the cause was determined to be burnt food.
  • An officer responded to Cherry Valley Avenue and 9th Street for a reported traffic light malfunction.
  • A truck struck the Cherry Valley overpass; the driver was charged with disregarding bridge clearance signs.
  • A company was charged with the operation of a truck on Old Country Road while 14,000 pounds overweight.
