Brownie Troop Spreading Word About Water Conservation

Brownie Troop 1432 will spread the word about water conservation as they march in Saturday's Homecoming parade.

The girls are earning their "Wonders of Water Journey," which, among other things, requires them to spread the word about saving water.

Armed with their troop banner and signs that address conservation, the girls will also be handing out cards to parade onlookers asking them to like their Facebook page.

Brownie Girl Scouts can earn three different "Journeys." Last year the troop earned the Brownie Quest Journey. Each Journey theme has four parts. Through Wonders of Water, the girls have learned about the importance of water and how to protect it.

During the summer, the girls kept a troop garden and took turns using water to watch it grow. They played games to learn about different ways in which to save water and attended a workshop at Hofstra University where they conducted science experiments using water.

"We have each made a formal promise to conserve water by taking shorter showers, turning the faucet off while brushing our teeth and to use left over bottled water for our flowers and plants," said Kimberly Murphy, troop leader.

"The last piece of our Journey is to spread the word in our community to remind others how important water is and encourage them to protect and conserve water too."

The Homecoming parade steps off of Seventh Street promptly at 1 p.m. and will make its way to the Garden City High School.
