What 1 Trapped, Defenseless Deer Taught LI Woman About Life
" We are always where we are supposed to be."

WESTHAMPTON BEACH, NY — Sometimes, the most defenseless among us leads the way.
That's a lesson that Westhampton Beach resident Kym Laube imparted Monday as she described an encounter with a deer that gave her pause.
"The YOU of commYOUnity," Laube wrote on Facebook.

Laube, who is also the executive director of Human Understanding & Growth Services, Inc. and a fierce prevention advocate, said she set out for her four-mile run Monday morning and was late, "bummed I would miss the sunrise as I was coming over the bridge."
All of a sudden, Laube said she heard a big commotion. "There was a hopeful red fox patiently waiting on the outcome of a deer stuck in fencing. The deer was thrashing and I was so afraid she would break her neck trying to break free," Laube said.

The deer touched Laube's heart. "The fear in a defenseless animal's eyes pierces the soul," she said.
The fox took off and Laube said she did her best to keep talking soothing to the deer, keeping the animal calm.
Soon after, she said, Westhampton Beach Village Police Officer William Officer Kevin Rubio arrived, " followed by one of our fantastic Department of Public Works guys — and they worked together to free the poor baby. Teamwork of our community's best resources did good today," she said.
The experience was rich with invaluable life lessons, Laube said.
"So many lessons," she said, listing them. "We are always where we are supposed to be. Had I caught the sunrise I might’ve missed helping the deer. We can get help if we ask, but we get as much help as we ask for. 3. Sometimes when we’re stuck and scared we want to fight and our fear takes over — even fear of the helpers when they show up. 4. Sometimes staying quiet and allowing others to help us is the best solution. Choose your commYOUnity!"
