California Fugitive Caught Trying To Steal From LI Store: Police

Police say the man was trying to steal $1,100 worth of merchandise from a department store, and had multiple fake IDs on him.

UNIONDALE, NY — A Queens man who is a fugitive from California was arrested at a shopping mall on Monday for trying to steal merchandise, police said.

Samir Munoz Valdenegro, 22, of Elmhurst, tried to steal more than $1,100 of merchandise from Saks OFF 5th, part of The Gallery at Westbury Plaza in Uniondale, police said. Store security caught and detained Valdenegro until officers arrived, police said.

During his arrest, police say they found multiple international identification cards on Valdenegro. They all had his picture on them, and were all fraudulent, police said.

Police also say Valdenegro has a full-extradition felony warrant from the Ventura County, California sheriff's office for a probation violation involving four counts of unauthorized use of personal identifying information of another, and conspiracy to commit a crime.

Valdenegro is charged with two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, second-degree criminal impersonation and fourth-degree grand larceny. He is also charged with warrant: fugitive from justice. He is scheduled to be arraigned today in First District Court in Hempstead.
