Five Ways to Commemorate 9/11

Today marks the twelfth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks that forever changed this nation. There are several ways to commemorate the day and remember all the lives lost:

1. 9/11 Remembrance Service: The Garden City Fire Department will hold a ceremony of remembrance Wednesday on the Village Green (corner of Stewart and Hilton Avenues) beginning a 6:30 p.m. The names of the 23 Garden City residents will be read aloud during the ceremony.

2. Wall of Remembrance: The Wall of Remembrance, a traveling memorial that pays tribute to all those lost on September 11, 2001, will be displayed in Eisenhower Park (Parking Field 8) through Thursday, Sept. 12, marking the first time the memorial will be displayed in New York.

3. TOH Seaside Ceremony: The Town of Hempstead will host a seaside memorial program at Point Lookout beginning at 7:30 a.m. Residents will be encouraged to write the names of victims and messages on a new 25-foot "Tribute to Heroes" three-dimensional replica of the World Trade Center rising above a city skyline mural. A dove release, casting of carnations upon a tribute fountain and more will also be included.

4. It's Patriot Day: Patriot Day is an annual observance on September 11 to remember those who were injured or died during the terrorist attacks. The President asks that American flags be flown at half-mast on homes, the White House and all United States government buildings as a mark of respect.

5. Firetruck Unveiling: The Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center will offer free admission all day in honor and remembrance of the the twelfth anniversary. The museum will unveil a new fire truck dedicated to the 343 firefighters who lost their lives that day and highlight the permanent September 11th exhibit.
