GARDEN CITY, NY — Last week, New York State Senator Kevin Thomas presented Garden City community member and parent Cristina Dickey with the NYS Senate Commendation Award. Dickey was honored for her significant contribution to the Garden City special education community.

Knowing the isolation and challenges of having a child with a disability, Dickey has dedicated her time over the years to be a resource for other parents and an unwavering advocate for all kids. She has served for multiple years as the Vice President of Communications for the Garden City Special Education PTA (SEPTA) and has created an award-winning monthly newsletter and website that is used as a resource by special needs families across Long Island.

She was instrumental in a community-wide screening and panel discussion of the film "Intelligent Lives" and has brought in memorable speakers on topics of anti-bullying and inclusion across all of our schools. Most recently, she launched a well-received series of Parents Helping Parents support groups for our community.
