Garden City Police Officer Saved Elderly Couple From Fire

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Oct. 5.

Sept. 28

  • As a result of a traffic stop on Harvard Street, an officer arrested a 20-year-driver for possession of a loaded semi-automatic pistol. He was also charged with driving with a suspended registration, unlicensed operation, and tinted windows.
  • A license plate was reported stolen from a motorcycle parked in Parking Field 11.
  • A company was charged with the operation of a tractor trailer on Clinton Road with an over-extended and unsecured load.

  • A victim’s identity was stolen and used to obtain an unauthorized loan.
  • A vehicle was reportedly vandalized while parked in Parking Field 6E.
  • A driver on Hilton Avenue was charged with driving with a suspended license and a suspended registration.
  • A driver on Rockaway Avenue was charged with driving with a suspended license and excessive speed.
  • A driver by the high school was charged with driving with a suspended license, a suspended registration, and excessive speed in a school zone.

Sept. 30

  • A man was seen on surveillance cameras rummaging through a vehicle on Meadow Street.

  • Officers responded to Rockaway Avenue and safeguarded the area due to a fallen tree limb.
  • Firefighters and police responded to a residence for an oven fire.

Oct. 2

  • As a result of strong winds, officers and Parks Department personnel responded to multiple reports of fallen tree limbs in the village.
  • A driver on Clinton Road was charged with driving with a suspended license.
  • A driver on Stewart Avenue was charged with driving with a suspended registration.

Oct. 3

  • Loose change was reported stolen from a vehicle parked in a Yale Street driveway.
  • Firefighters and police responded to Stewart Avenue for a report of a gas leak. Firefighters checked the area with negative results.
  • A company was charged with the operation of a truck on Hilton Avenue while 22,000 pounds overweight.

Oct. 4

  • Firefighters, police and NYU medics responded to Roxbury Road for a basement fire where the male resident suffered serious burns. He was immediately transported to a local hospital. The female resident was treated at the scene by medics and released. Firefighters located and extinguished the fire. The Fire Marshal’s Office, Garden City detectives, and the Nassau County Police Department Arson Squad responded to the scene. The investigation is ongoing. Other local fire departments assisted.
  • A victim’s credit card account was used without permission to make an unauthorized online purchase.
  • A vehicle reportedly left the scene after colliding into the rear of another vehicle on Nassau Boulevard.
  • Firefighters, police and NYU Medics responded to a Stewart Avenue residence for a report of smoke inside the residence. Upon arrival, an officer saw smoke and located two elderly residents inside the garage. He removed the residents to a safe location. The officer then conducted a preliminary search of the house for more occupants, but found no one. He located the fire in the front wall of the residence. Firefighters responded, extinguished the fire, and rendered the area safe. The elderly residents refused medical attention and were released to family. Other local fire departments assisted. The Nassau Fire Marshal and Nassau County Police Department's Arson Squad responded to the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
