LONG ISLAND, NY — In addition to complicating the travel plans for Christmas, the storm that's hitting the area on Friday could also cause coastal flooding.

The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook today for the entire South Shore of Long Island. The storm that is coming Thursday and into Friday could cause flooding during the high tide.

The Weather Service says there is the potential for widespread moderate flooding along coastal areas, with localized regions of major flooding. The flooding is likely during the morning high tide, which crests around 7:30 a.m. There could also be lesser flooding at the evening high tide, which crests around 8 p.m.

In addition to the flooding, the weather service is also warning about the possibility of strong, damaging winds coming with the storm, which could lead to downed trees and power lines.

As the cold front moves in, it will also bring a steep drop in temperatures. The Weather Service is predicting that temperatures could drop 10 degrees during the day, going from around 50 in the late morning to the 30s by the early evening.
