LONG ISLAND, NY — Rain and snow could kick off what is looking to be a very cold weekend for Long Island, with a freeze warning issued for parts of Nassau County for Friday night.

Long Island is going to be in for a frigid weekend, according to the National Weather Service. The outer edges of the lake effect snow that is plaguing western New York could also lead to some scattered snow and rain showers Friday evening.

A freeze warning is in effect for southern Nassau County for 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday. The National Weather Service warns that the snap freeze could kill sensitive plants.
