WESTBURY, NY — A man was shot in the leg in a confrontation with Nassau County police officers in Westbury early Sunday morning, police officials said.

According to police, a person saw two men trying to open the doors of the Verizon store, located in the Gallery at Westbury Plaza at 880 Old Country Road in Garden City, around 2:45 a.m. The person told police that as he approached the men, one of them pointed what appeared to be a handgun at them. They drove away and called 911.

Police say officers found the two men in front of 435 B Old Country Road, down the block in Westbury. As the officers approached, police say one of the men turned and threatened them with what appeared to be a gun.

The officers opened fire and hit the man in the ankle. The other man fled on foot.

Officers put a tourniquet on the man's leg to control the bleeding, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment. The two officers were taken to a hospital for evaluation, which officials said is standard practice for any time officers have to fire their guns.
