Non-Resident Parking Permits Available For Purchase Monday

Beginning Monday at 8:30 a.m. non-residents can purchase parking permits from village hall for the Stewart Manor railroad station.

Fifty-five permits are available and will be sold on a first come, first serve basis for $250, which is payable by cash, check, credit card or money order.

Effective Oct. 1, all 55 "unrestricted parking spaces" in the parking field on New Hyde Park Road will require a permit. The village board of trustees approved these changes earlier this year when trustee John DeMaro suggested making the unrestricted spots permit-required as a way to generate revenue for the village.

A total of 172 parking spaces are offered at the New Hyde Park Road lot but only 117 require a permit. The parking field is the only train station lot that offers free spaces within the village of Garden City.

Currently, Garden City residents can park at any of the five station fields in the village for an annual $150 permit fee. All parking is first come first serve, according to village clerk Brian Ridgway.

Trustees had to approve changes to a local law since nothing existed in current code that allowed the sale of non-resident permits.

Non-residents must bring a copy of their vehicle's current registration at the time of purchase. The permits will be valid for one year, effective Oct. 1, 2013 to Sept. 30, 2014, for the Stewart Manor railroad station parking field only.
