Teen In Stolen Car Had Illegal Gun: Garden City Police

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending March 30.

March 24

  • Officers assisted fire fighters for a fire alarm activation at Garden City Plaza. The cause was determined to be a faulty sprinkler system.
  • A person’s identity was stolen and used to open an unauthorized cell phone account.
  • Upon investigation of a suspicious vehicle in Parking Field 2S, Officers arrested a 57-year-old man for patronizing a prostitute and a 42-year-old woman for prostitution. The woman was also charged with an outstanding Nassau County drug possession warrant.
  • A truck carrying an improper container struck the traffic light at Franklin Avenue and 7th Street causing it to hang low, which resulted in a second truck striking it. The area was safeguarded until work crews replaced the light. The operator of the first truck was charged with driving a vehicle exceeding height requirements, unsecured load, no safety flag, and uninsured operation.

  • Garden City detectives arrested an 18-year-old man who illegally entered an Adelphi University dorm by climbing through a bedroom window and then proceeded to walk through the first and second floors of the building before exiting. The man, who was not a student, was charged with criminal trespassing. Adelphi Public Safety assisted in the investigation.
  • Officers arrested a 22-year-old man in Parking Field 5 for hitting his ex-girlfriend and taking money from her. He was charged with robbery. He was also charged with criminal contempt for violating a stay away court order.
  • As a result of a traffic investigation on St. James Street South, officers arrested a 26-year-old man for violation of a parole warrant for robbery, suspended license and passing a red light.
  • A 40-year-old woman was arrested on Stewart Avenue for possession of four forged DMV documents, unregistered vehicle, and improper plates.
  • Officers assisted the Nassau County Police Department by recovering a backpack in Garden City Plaza that contained possible proceeds from a larceny that occurred in Roosevelt Field Mall.

March 26

  • A woman received a phone call from a man claiming to be from Apple. The caller told the woman that her account was hacked and to fix the issue she needed to buy gift cards and give him the numbers. The victim complied with the request; however, it was later determined to be a scam.
  • An eastbound train partially derailed in the vicinity of St. James Street South and came to a stop in the rear of a Commercial Avenue building. No injuries were reported. The MTA assigned work crews to remove the train and make necessary repairs to the tracks.

March 27

  • Garden City detectives arrested a 34-year-old man for recent incidents of graffiti on the Tanners Pond bridge, on a Stewart Avenue utility box and on a Meadow Street utility box.

March 28

  • Garden City fire fighters and police officers responded to two fire alarm calls during the overnight hours at an Adelphi University dorm. Upon investigation, both calls were determined to be false alarms.
  • A victim’s identity was stolen and used to open multiple unauthorized financial accounts.

March 29

  • Graffiti was found on the walls of the Chestnut Street underpass.

March 30

  • Officers arrested a 17-year-old with a loaded firearm in a car which was reported stolen in Virginia. He was charged with criminal possession of a loaded firearm and possession of stolen property. The 18-year-old man driving the car was charged with possession of marijuana and two traffic offenses. Another passenger, an 18-year-old man, was arrested for possession of four stolen credit cards.
  • Graffiti was found on a tree on Washington Avenue. Similar graffiti was found on a 7th Street building.
  • Upon investigation of a work van striking the Chestnut Street bridge, the 48-year-old driver was charged with disregarding height clearance signs. There were no injuries reported.
  • Fire fighters and police officers responded to a Huntington Road residence for a report of a fire. Upon investigation, it was determined to be a boiler-related smoke condition.
