Truck Driver Hit Garden City Overpass, Fled Scene: Police

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Nov. 22.
Nov. 16
- Officers assisted firefighters who responded to Roosevelt Street and extinguished an active house fire. There were no occupants in the home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. The Fire Marshal and Nassau County Arson Squad responded to the scene.
- Officers investigated a report of a box truck striking the Cherry Valley bridge and leaving the scene with substantial damage. With assistance from Nassau County officers, the truck was located on Main Street in Mineola. The driver was arrested and charged with disregarding bridge clearance signs and leaving the scene of an accident.
- A driver on Meadow Street was charged with driving with a suspended license and passing a stop sign.
- Firefighters and police responded to a residence for a fire call and determined the cause to be a leaking hot water heater.

- A male victim reports a man pointed a laser light at him causing damage, pain and discomfort to his eye.
- Firefighters and police responded to the high school for a fire alarm and determined the cause to be burnt food.
- Officers investigated a report of a person receiving suspicious social media messages.
Nov. 18
- A truck driver on New Hyde Park Road was charged with driving with an unsecured load.
- Firefighters and police responded to a residence for a carbon monoxide alarm and determined the cause to be a faulty battery.
- A driver was charged with leaving the scene of an accident after striking a tree on Rockaway Avenue and fleeing the area.

- A man with a ski mask was seen walking between cars in an 11th Street driveway and then leaving the scene in another vehicle which was waiting in the street. When an officer attempted to stop the vehicle for traffic violations, it fled the area at a high rate of speed. It was later determined the vehicle in question was reported stolen from Newark. There was no loss reported on 11th Street.
- A driver on Edgemere Road was charged driving with a suspended registration and passing a stop sign.
- A driver on Clinton Road was charged with driving with a suspended registration and operating a cell phone.
Nov. 20
- Upon investigation of a domestic incident, a 49-year-old man was arrested for violation of a court issued stay away order. He was charged with criminal contempt.
- A victim reports a package delivered by the Post Office was stolen.
- Upon investigation of a smoke condition on East Drive, officers and firefighters observed a resident burning leaves in a back yard. Firefighters extinguished the fire. Officers cited the resident for violation of the village code regarding open fires.
- A driver on Tanners Pond Road was charged with driving with fraudulent paper license plates and passing a stop sign.
Nov. 21
- A business reports the theft of multiple E-Z passes, which were subsequently used at various toll locations for a loss of $30,000.
- A victim’s identity was reportedly stolen and used to open an unauthorized bank account.
- A vehicle was reportedly damaged by unknown means while parked at the Wyndham Condos.
- A truck driver on Pell Terrace was charged with improper registration and defective brakes.
- Upon investigation of a truck striking the Cherry Valley bridge, the driver was charged with disregarding bridge clearance signs.
- A driver on Clinton Road was charged with driving with a suspended license, a suspended registration and excessive speed.
