Uptick In Online Scams; Garden City Police Caution Residents

Police outline the various types of scams and how to protect yourself.

GARDEN CITY, NY — With online scams rising, the Garden City Police Department is warning residents.

During these scams, victims are financially targeted via telephone, email, or text by someone who makes false statements and promises, to manipulate them into sending money by way of gift cards, illegal money transfers.

Police Commissioner Kenneth Jackson has several tips to keep people safe, such as having your social security card and other important identification documents in a safe, secure place.

Never give out social security number or other personal information over the phone or via text, email or web notification, he said.
