Mid-Manhattan Library Will Close For Two Years During Renovations

A mid-Manhattan branch of the NYPL will close for more than two years during extensive renovations.

MURRAY HILL, NY — A mid-Manhattan branch of the New York Public Library will close for more than two years starting in August for extensive renovations, the library system said.

The branch, located 455 5th Ave., isn't expected to re-open until early 2020, NYPL officials said in a statement released Thursday. The $200 million renovation will update the branch's building with a slew of new amenities, including a a business library and a full floor dedicated to separate libraries for children and teens, the NYPL said. The renovated space will have more public space and more seating. Also on the list of repairs: Midtown's first free public roof terrace.

The mid-Manhattan library is across the street from the NYPL's flagship library, the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. All services and classes currently offered in the space will move to other midtown libraries during the construction.
