Former Millionaire Goes Missing After Leaving Bellevue Hospital

Authorities are searching for a hedge fund millionaire, who in a stunning fall from grace, became homeless and is now missing, police said.

GRAMERCY, NY — A former hedge fund millionaire has gone from living the high life to being a missing homeless person, authorities said.

Paul Greenwald, 70, was reported missing after he left Bellevue Hospital on Aug. 11 at about 2 a.m. on Saturday after he was admitted to the hospital for unknown reasons two days earlier, police said.

Security camera footage shows Greenwald, who police say is homeless, leaving the hospital with a yellow envelope in hand, officials said.

Greenwald's shocking fall from grace began with a 2009 incident with his estranged wife, according to the New York Post. The trouble kicked off after Greenwald attacked his ex-wife, Michelle Greenwald, an NYU professor and author, the Post reported at the time.

Greenwald, who once lived in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, allegedly lured Michelle outside of her apartment with a call to check on her parked car. When she arrived, he grabbed her by the arm and screamed at her — violating a restraining order she had taken out against him, the Post reported.

Greenwald was released on bail but continued to harass Michelle over the phone. In 2010, he was slapped with seven charges of felony criminal contempt and reportedly shouted, "the judge is a f--king crook."

The former millionaire was then committed to Bellevue Hospital's jail ward after specialists claimed he was too sick to plead not guilty, the newspaper reported at the time.

Greenwald is described as six-foot, 200 pounds with blue eyes and gray hair. He was last spotted wearing a red shirt, black pants and white socks with black sandals. He also wore a pair of glasses perched on his head, authorities said.

Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
