'From Where I Stand' Is the Interactive Election Mural NYC Needed

The perfect inclusive and personal end to a nasty election.

FLATIRON, NY — Queens-based artist Lydia Ortiz and her husband, Patrick Rafanan, designed a large mural on the ground in front of the Flatiron Building in Manhattan for Instagram, called the #FromWhereIStand2016 mural. The purpose of the mural is to get people talking about which issues personally matter to them in the final moments before this whole crazy election comes to a close.

"We love when art provokes people to think and act — we hope this mural is doing just that," Ortiz said in a statement. "We created the mural to get people to voice out what they stand for during this election."

Ortiz was born and raised in Manila, Philippines, and she believes it's a privilege Americans have to be involved in their government.

"We are privileged to have freedom to speak our minds and the right to vote and when these two are put to use, we help make responsible decisions for those who are unable to,” she said. "Voting empowers us as a nation."

People posted selfies with the mural under the tag #FromWhereIStand2016. Several first-time voters posted photos of themselves at the scene as well.

@cameronrussell here! I'm voting on Tuesday because climate change is not a Chinese conspiracy, because women and POC and the undocumented and incarcerated deserve to be treated with respect, I'm voting because #blacklivesmatter, I'm voting because it is unacceptable that in 2016 anyone thinks progress looks like hate. Im voting because two-thirds of all wildlife is on track to die by 2020, 600,000 children die every year because of air pollution, climate change is a global emergency and inequality threatens our ability to respond. In these times it is unconscionable to allow someone who has made a political career out of bullying the most vulnerable anywhere near the Oval Office. Why are YOU voting? Let us know using #fromwhereistand2016 (art by @lydia_ortiz & @soybaby)
