The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Long Island.

"The first widespread hot spell of the season is expected this weekend, with heat indices in the low-to-mid 90s away from the coast," the weather service said. "This will increase the risk of heat-related illness for vulnerable populations."

Those heading to the beaches this weekend should be mindful of the water temperatures, which are currently far from midsummer levels, according to AccuWeather.

Physical incapacitation and hypothermia are likely in as little as 10 minutes if you fall in the water. Water temperatures are in the 50s, the weather service said.

Thunderstorms come to break the heat Sunday night. Storms could become severe and bring the risk of strong winds, flooding downpours and hail, AccuWeather says.
