Candlewood Student Fundraises for iPads for Children with Autism

Nova Shek is honored by Suffolk County Legis. Steve Stern for her efforts.

Suffolk County Legis. Steve Stern (D-Huntington) awarded Nova Shek with a proclamation for her donation of two iPads to Building Blocks Preschool for children with Autism and other developmental disorders.

Nova, a sixth-grade student at Candlewood Middle School, made chocolate lollipops in the shape of a puzzle piece, a symbol of Autism Spectrum Disorder and sold them to raise funds for the I-Pads. Nova’s younger brother attends the school and she noticed that he and his classmates were able to use the I-Pads to effectively communicate and wanted to help.

“I am proud to honor Nova Shek today,” Stern said. “She has demonstrated great maturity, determination and compassion for others through her successful efforts and has brought great pride to her school, her family and our entire community.”
