Melville Vet Gets Long-Overdue Medals

Melville resident Bernard Sanders finally got two medals Friday for service in World War II.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., gave the medals, the National Defense Service Medal and the Army of Occupatio World War II Medal, which were awarded years ago. But Sanders never received the medals until Friday.

Sanders, who was a corporal, told Schumer’s office that after a recent discussion about his service with his grandson, he was compelled to try to retrieve his two medals so the youngster would have them.
