Harlem Building Has Most Barking Dog Complaints In NYC

The data team at Localize.city studied which New York City addresses received the most dog bark complaints in a 12-month period.

HARLEM, NY — One Harlem building took the top spot in all of New York City for the most dog-related noise complaints in a 12-month span, according to a new report from Localize.city.

The multi-family brownstone home at 130 W. 111th St., located between Lenox and Seventh avenues, racked up dog-related noise complaints on 37 different days from July 31, 2017, to July 30, 2018, Localize.city first reported. Data scientists at Localize created an algorithm that analyzed the recency and frequency of noise complaints to match complaints to buildings.

In the case of 130 W. 11th St., Localize decided to do some digging and found out that the problem may lie with the building's human residents instead of its canine ones. The building's owner Yvette Harrington told Localize that her neighbor is calling 311 to complain about her bulldogs because she's trying to kick the neighbor out to move her elderly mother into the apartment.

Harrington rarely lets her dogs — named Tomorrow and Yesterday — make too much noise and was bothered that neighbors complained about the pups without speaking to her first, she told Localize.

Over the past five years, New Yorkers have filed 7,200 dog-related noise complaints per year, according to the report. The amount of noise complaints fluctuates on a month-by-month basis, with July and August seeing the least amount of complaints and March and September seeing the greatest amount of complaints.
