Harlem Studio Museum Wins City Design Award
The Harlem Studio Museum's new West 125th Street facility was honored by the New York City Public Design Commission.

HARLEM, NY — The New York City Public Design Commission is impressed with the Studio Museum in Harlem's plans for a new facility. The Harlem cultural institution's planned 82,ooo-square-foot facility was recently named a winner of the commission's annual excellence in design awards.
The museum's new home was one of eleven winners of the city's design awards. This year's honorees all adhere to the principals of creating a "more equitable, resilient, and diverse city for all New Yorkerks," according to a mayor's office press release.
"These eleven winning schools, parks, libraries, museums, and artworks aren’t only beautiful – they enrich their communities by bringing revitalizing existing spaces and creating vibrant new ones," Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement.

The Studio Museum filed plans to construct its new facility in January after revealing its design in 2017. The David Adjaye-designed building will rise 122 feet tall on West 125th Street between Lenox and Seventh avenues and contain 67,367 square feet of museum space, according to the development plans. The new museum complex will feature galleries on several floors, a cafe, a rooftop terrace, workshop space and an auditorium, according to the building plans.
The Studio Museum first announced plans to build a new home in 2015 after outgrowing its previous space — a century-old commercial building adapted for museum use in the 80s.
