HAUPPAUGE, NY — Representatives from Stony Brook Children’s Hospital visited classes at Forest Brook Elementary in the Hauppauge School District for an important lesson on safety and injury prevention, the Hauppauge School District announced.
First graders in Lynne Clarkin, Margaret Govits and Dawn Woolsey’s classes mended their "injured" stuffed animals in the Teddy Bear Clinic.
First, students learned all about car and helmet safety, including information on where a seatbelt should sit, how tight it should be and the correct way a helmet should fit.

To showcase how a helmet protects the brain, students participated in an egg drop with the
egg representing the skull. While one egg equipped with a "helmet" dropped with its parachute and remained intact, the other, without protection, fell and broke.
Then, students dressed as doctors and nurses in medical caps and gloves to provide care to their stuffed animals brought in from home. Using bandages, tape and splints, students fixed their injured furry friends and learned ways to explore and play safely to prevent similar injuries.
