Suffolk Gas Station Fire Caused By Vehicle

A mechanic was working on a vehicle's fuel tank when it caught fire, police say.

ISLANDIA, NY — Firefighters dealt with a fire at a BP gas station, at 1964 Veterans Memorial Highway, Islandia, on Wednesday morning.

A mechanic was working on the fuel tank of a vehicle when it caught fire at approximately 8:30 a.m., Suffolk police said. There were no injuries, police said.

The fire spread through the service shop, causing part of the building to collapse, Newsday reported.The fire was brought under control by 10:40 a.m., according to Newsday.

Southbound Veterans Memorial Highway was closed at Sycamore Lane.
