Sheriff's Office: Man Drove Drunk With Child in Car, Violating Leandra's Law

A Jackson Heights man was arrested Monday morning and charged with violating Leandra's Law after driving drunk with a 3-year-old girl in Nesconset.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Paul Demetro, 30, was observed fishtailing a 2010 Audi through an intersection in Nesconset at 4:40 a.m. Demetro, who was accompanied by two passengers – the child's mother and a 29-year-old man, was stopped and interviewed by a deputy sheriff and found to be under the influence of alcohol.   

The sheriff's office said the 3-year-old was not properly restrained in a car seat. The girl was later brought to Selden and placed in custody of her mother by the male passenger, who was sober and with a driver's license. 

Demetro was arrested on charges including with aggravated DWI for violating Leandra’s Law, a felony; endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor; unlicensed operation of a vehicle, a misdemeanor; and seat belt violation.

Demetro is set to be arraigned Tuesday in First District Court in Central Islip.
