Vecchio Once Served in JFK's NYPD Guard Unit
Smithtown supervisor helped ensure Kennedy's safety during a visit to New York City prior to his election as presd

A black-and-white photograph hanging in Smithtown Supervisor Patrick Vecchio's office captures a moment when he was side-by-side with late President John F. Kennedy.Â
Vecchio, while a young New York City detective, served in a NYPD guard unit during Kennedy's visit in October 1960 - roughly one week before he was elected president, Newsday reports.Â
The photograph shows Vecchio walking alongside a Chevrolet convertible, atop of which sits then Sen. John F. Kennedy and his wife, Jackie, as they wave to the Manhattan crowds.Â
Vecchio took his job seriously, recalling into a minor altercation with a photographer who tried to get too close to the Kennedys during the procession to City Hall.Â
Â
It was one of at least 10 times Vecchio remembers guarding the Kennedys through the 60s.Â
