Downed Wires Trap Driver In Hicksville

The driver was able to escape after firefighters de-energized the wires, officials say.

A driver became trapped by downed wires after two utility poles fell down, causing a power outage in Hicksville on Friday morning.

According to fire officials, a car was traveling southbound when the utility poles came down, causing the man's vehicle to be surrounded by live wires, on South Broadway near Lee Avenue at 12:25 a.m.

The Hicksville Fire Department responded to the scene and de-energized the wires. The driver was then able to climb out of his vehicle unharmed.

Hundreds of nearby homes and businesses were left without power from the downed wires, fire officials say. South Broadway was closed in both directions while power was restored.
