Hicksville Awarded $10M To Revitalize Downtown Area

Officials say the state funding will help create jobs, housing opportunities and attract more young people to the area.

Hicksville will receive $10 million in state funding to help renovate and revitalize the downtown area, officials announced Wednesday.

The area that will be improved is 162 acres of Hicksville’s downtown that is currently made up of office buildings.

Officials say this initiative will create new jobs, attract businesses, bring in young people, make it more walkable and bicycle friendly and improve the overall quality of life in the area.

“This funding is essential in revitalizing downtown Hicksville and bringing a much needed economic boost to our region,” Sen. Elaine Phillips said in a press release. “Investing in our local communities is paramount to our region’s future.”

Leaders in the community have been gathering input from residents for years about the redevelopment of the downtown area, Phillips said.

"Hicksville's downtown is a prime location for revitalization, new jobs and new housing opportunities,” Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino said.

The Town of Oyster Bay, with $300,000 in planning funds, will begin developing a Strategic Investment Plan. The plan will be led by municipal representatives and community leaders, as well as a team of private sector experts and state planners.

Hicksville was among 10 New York communities chosen from each of the state’s regional economic development regions for this Downtown Revitalization Initiative.
